What schema does
Schema tells a parser what a page is about. Without it, a model has to infer your entity from prose, which it may get wrong. The value is disambiguation, not promotion.
The types worth your time
- Organization and WebSite: establishes the entity behind the domain.
- FAQPage: pairs a question with its answer, which suits extract-based citation.
- Article: supplies author, date and structure for editorial content.
- Product and Offer: states price and availability so it is not guessed.
- BreadcrumbList: confirms hierarchy when a deep page is cited alone.
The types that rarely change outcomes
Decorative types, or markup added without accurate underlying data, cost maintenance time and return nothing. Adding a large schema library for its own sake is a common and expensive distraction.
Accuracy beats coverage
One correct Organization block with real contact details is worth more than twenty schemas describing things that are not true on the page. Inaccurate markup actively costs you: a price that differs from the page is a contradiction a retrieval system will notice.
Keep it in sync
Schema drifts the moment the page changes. Treat it as part of the release checklist rather than a one-off task, and validate it on the same schedule as your content review.
