A Page Structure Built to Be Quoted

A reusable template for pages that need to survive extraction into an AI answer, with the reasoning behind each part.

The constraint this template answers

Retrieval systems take a portion of your page and assemble it into an answer. Everything below exists to make that extraction clean: unambiguous boundaries, a stated conclusion, and facts specific enough to stand alone.

This is not a style preference. Content organised for a human reader can still be unextractable, and the most common reason is that the conclusion appears after the preamble.

The template

Six sections, in this order. The ordering is the part that matters most: the answer comes before the argument.

  • Title — one question or claim, phrased the way a buyer would ask it
  • Direct answer — two to four sentences, no preamble, contains the conclusion
  • Key facts — a table or list: numbers, conditions, versions, dates
  • Detail — one section per sub-question, each heading a standalone claim
  • Objections — the questions a sceptic would ask, answered directly
  • Next step — one clear action, and where it leads

Why the direct answer comes first

Retrieval frequently takes an opening passage. If the opening is context, background and a description of the author's company, what gets retrieved is the least useful part of the page.

Writing the answer first also disciplines the rest of the page: you have to decide what the conclusion actually is before you can support it. Pages that skip this step tend to end without one.

Why headings must work alone

An answer assembled from your page will often carry a heading rather than your sentence. A heading reading 'Pricing' tells a reader nothing when extracted without its paragraph; one reading 'Starter costs £49 per month for up to three sites' carries the answer on its own.

Test: read each heading by itself. If it does not tell the reader what they will learn, rewrite it.

Why tables survive extraction

A table's cells are already bounded. A paragraph's sentences are not: extraction can take a fragment that starts and ends arbitrarily, and a qualifier at the end can be cut off, inverting the meaning.

Comparisons, pricing, specifications and step sequences are natural table content. Use them where the material genuinely compares rather than forcing them.

Applying it to an existing page

You do not need to rewrite everything. Pick the pages that answer your buyers' highest-value questions, and take them one at a time against this structure. Rewriting ten pages this way outperforms publishing twenty new ones in the old shape, because the rewritten pages were already earning traffic.

  • Start with pages that already attract links or direct traffic
  • Move the conclusion to the top; this is often the whole change
  • Rewrite headings to stand alone
  • Convert comparisons and specs into tables
  • Leave a page's original URL and title alone

The template is not about making pages shorter. It is about making each part independently useful, so that whichever part gets retrieved, it still means something. Sources reviewed on 2026-10-17.
